Fourth and smallest of the communities of the papal Comtat Venaissin, Pernes-les-Fontaines sheltered a carrière (Jewish quarter) with synagogue and its own institutions from the late 14th century until the Revolution. The community was attached to the pontifical Consistory of Avignon and practiced the Comtadin rite (minhag Avignon).
