Monteux is one of four papal Jewish communities of the Comtat Venaissin (the « arba kehillot »), together with Carpentras, Cavaillon, and L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. It had a synagogue and carrière (Jewish quarter) attested since the 14th century, and Jews there benefited from papal protection until their integration into France in 1791.
