Aleksandrów Łódzki (Aleksander)

Aleksandrów Łódzki (Aleksander in Yiddish) was the seat of the Aleksander Hasidic dynasty, founded in the nineteenth century, which became one of the greatest in the Polish Jewish world with tens of thousands of followers. The town housed a dynamic Jewish community mixing weavers, merchants and artisans. During the Shoah, the Jews of Aleksander were deported to Chelmno and extermination camps; the community disappeared entirely.
