Adwa (Aduwa)

Adwa (Aduwa), city in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, is famous for the battle of March 1, 1896, where Ethiopia inflicted a decisive defeat on the Italian army. The Tigray region, like other mountainous zones of northern Ethiopia, contained Beta Israel (Ethiopian Jewish) populations in surrounding villages, though the community of Adwa itself was modest.
