Courtier associé de Mocatta & Goldsmid (courtiers en métaux précieux de la Banque d'Angleterre) ; sa sœur Rachel était la mère de Sir Moses Montefiore. Lors du schisme de 1841 il quitta Bevis Marks et contribua à fonder la West London Synagogue of British Jews. Retiré des affaires, il se consacra à l'étude : il traduisit de l'hébreu le Hizzuk Emunah d'Isaac de Troki (Faith Strengthened, 1851) et publia The Inquisition and Judaism (1845) et The Wisdom of Solomon (1834).
