Disciple de Simcha Bunim de Peshischa puis de Menachem Mendel de Kotzk, dont il se sépara en 1839 pour fonder sa cour à Izbica. Sa pensée, centrée sur la liberté intérieure et la volonté divine sous-jacente à tout acte, fut recueillie par son petit-fils Gershon Henokh Leiner dans le Mei ha-Shiloah. Parmi ses disciples : Tzadok ha-Kohen de Lublin et Leibele Eiger.
