Physicien théoricien juif allemand né à Nuremberg en 1884, il fut l'assistant, collaborateur et coauteur d'Albert Einstein à Zurich. Professeur à la RWTH d'Aix-la-Chapelle à partir de 1921, il fut chassé de son poste en 1933 comme « non-aryen » et communiste supposé, et mourut en exil à Dublin en 1939.
