Joseph Caro

Author of the Shoulhan Aroukh (Table Set, 1565), the code of Jewish law that remains the universal halakhic reference. Born in Spain, exiled to Portugal then to Turkey, he settled in Safed in Galilee, which became the center of Jewish mysticism in the 16th century.
