Fils de Solomon Loeb (cofondateur de la banque Kuhn, Loeb & Co.), d'ascendance juive-allemande. Retiré des affaires en 1901 pour raisons de santé, il se consacre à l'érudition classique et à la philanthropie. En 1911 il fonde et dote la Loeb Classical Library, série bilingue des classiques grecs et latins.
