Priest and scribe, he led the second return from exile and restored the study of Torah in Jerusalem. The Talmudic tradition (Sanhedrin 21b) affirms that 'if the Torah had not been given by Moses, it could have been by Ezra'. He founded the Great Assembly (Knesset ha-Gedolah).
