Joseph ben Juda ibn 'Aqnin, dit al-Maghrabi, médecin et poète, disciple de Maïmonide, naquit vers 1160 et mourut en 1226. Il vécut ses vingt-cinq premières années auprès de son père, artisan à Ceuta, sous la persécution religieuse des Almohades, avant de gagner l'Égypte, où il étudia moins de deux ans sous la direction de Maïmonide à Fostat, puis s'installa à Alep comme médecin. C'est probablement lors d'un voyage qu'il assista, à Bagdad, à l'autodafé des œuvres du philosophe Abd al-Salam, en 1192 ; le Guide des égarés de Maïmonide fut rédigé à son intention pour poursuivre par écrit leur dialogue.
