Les Juifs de Saint-Eustache (Statia)

The small Dutch island of Saint-Eustache (Statia) was in the 17th and 18th centuries a flourishing commercial crossroads of the Caribbean, nicknamed the 'Golden Rock', which attracted Sephardic merchants. They founded a congregation there and built a synagogue, whose ruins (Honen Dalim) still testify to this presence. The island's prosperity rested on re-export trade, in which Jewish merchants actively participated. With the commercial decline of Saint-Eustache, following in particular the upheavals of the late 18th century, the community declined and then disappeared in the 19th century.
