Les Juifs de Mazagan (El Jadida)

Settled in Mazagan (today El Jadida), an old Portuguese stronghold on the Moroccan Atlantic coast, the Jews there formed a community of merchants and intermediaries between the interior and the coast. Organized around their synagogues, members benefited under the Protectorate from education provided by the Alliance israélite universelle. The community participated in the economic life of a developing port city. In the mid-20th century, it dispersed largely towards Casablanca and Israel.
