Les Juifs de Chios

The island of Chios, in the Aegean Sea, experienced ancient Jewish presence, attested in the Byzantine period and then under Genoese and Ottoman rule. The community, of Romaniote tradition then influenced by Sephardic contribution, lived from commerce in this island renowned for its products, notably mastic. It always remained small in size. Over centuries and political upheavals, it was gradually dispersed or assimilated, leaving only residual presence in modern and contemporary times.
