Kabbaliste qui, entre 1594 et 1600, diffusa en Italie une version particulière (dite « sarouguienne ») de la Kabbale d'Isaac Louria, fondant une véritable école. Bien qu'il n'ait pas étudié auprès de Louria à Safed, il eut accès à des écrits des disciples de Louria (Hayyim Vital, Moïse Jonah, Joseph ibn Tabul) et en construisit sa propre doctrine, influençant notamment Menahem Azariah da Fano en Italie et, plus tard, les Pays-Bas.
