Book of Arḥot Ḥayim on Shulḥan ʻArukh Oraḥ Ḥayim, by Rabbi Naḥman Kahana, head of the rabbinical court of Spinka. Sigeth, {year}-{year} [1898]. First and second parts, in two separate volumes. On the title pages of both volumes are the seals of the author, the Admor Rabbi Naḥman Kahana of Spinka. In the second volume is the seal of his grandson Rabbi Naḥman Kahana ({year}-{year}), the Admor of Spinka in Bnei Brak, from the period of his stay in Carlsbad, with a number of glosses and corrections in manuscript, apparently in his handwriting. Includes manuscript preparation pages for printing with corrections for a new edition that he printed in {year} together with his brother the Admor Rabbi Joseph Meir Kahana of Spinka-Jerusalem. Part A: Section 1-{end}. [3], 178 pages. Part B: Section 117-{end}. [2], 203 pages. 30 cm. Fragile paper. Good condition, stains, tears on several pages. Wear on bindings.

Giant portrait photograph of Theodor Herzl (photographer unknown), with a signed dedication in his own handwriting. Jerusalem, late October 1898. At the bottom of the photograph, a dedication in Herzl's handwriting: "Herrn Paletz / October 98 / Jerusalem / th Herzl". On October 26, 1898, Herzl arrived in the Land of Israel at the head of a small Zionist delegation, with the aim of meeting with the German Emperor Wilhelm II during the latter's visit to the Land. During this visit he stayed six days in Jerusalem, during which he dedicated the photograph before us (he also visited Jaffa, Motza, the Mikveh Israel agricultural school, Rishon le-Zion, Ness Ziona and Rehovot). To the best of our knowledge, the recipient of the dedication was Jacob David (ben Ezra) Paletz (also written: Palz / Peltz), a relative of Herzl, who resided in the "Meah Shearim" neighborhood in Jerusalem. Paletz died in Jerusalem on the 29th of Elul 5694 [1934] and was buried in the Mount of Olives cemetery, in the plot of the "American Brothers Association". Photograph 48×58 cm, in an ornate gold frame 69.5×58.5 cm. A break across the full width of the photograph, at its center (repaired).
