Huneric extends to Jews the measures taken against Catholics

The Vandal king Huneric, who persecuted the Catholics of Africa in order to convert them to Arianism, extended to the Jews the measures taken against them: the recalcitrant lost their property and were forced to go into exile or convert. The sources are too sparse to know how many yielded.

The communities of Roman Africa were ancient and numerous — the inscriptions of Volubilis, Cyrene, and Carthage bear witness to this — and this persecution is one of the rare documented episodes of a Germanic religious policy applied south of the Mediterranean. African Judaism survived, and the Arab conquerors would find it still in place.
