The Jews of Yemen had lived for centuries under the status of dhimmi, subject to a specific tax, to restrictions on dress, and to a decree imposing the conversion of orphans. The Aden riots of the late 1940s and the proclamation of the State of Israel made their situation finally untenable.
The imam authorized their departure. Families made their way on foot to the assembly camps in Aden, often after weeks of marching and at the cost of many deaths along the way, before being airlifted to Israel. The operation, known as "Magic Carpet," lasted less than a year.
It emptied Yemen of virtually its entire Jewish population, one of the oldest in the world, whose liturgical and manuscript tradition had developed apart from the great rabbinical centers.
