The Portuguese reconquest of Dutch Brazil obliged the community of Recife to leave the country; part of it made for Amsterdam, and twenty-three persons for New Amsterdam.
Recife had been, under the Dutch, the first open Jewish community of the Americas, with its synagogue and its rabbi come from Amsterdam; the reconquest brought back the Portuguese Inquisition, and departure was the only way out. The small group that landed in New Amsterdam, despite the governor's opposition, founded there the first Jewish community of what would become New York.
