Pekoudei

The word pekoudei means "accounts": Moses demands an exact accounting of the metals received and used. A public rendering of accounts closes the book of Exodus — transparency regarding community funds is established as a religious act. The archives of Jewish brotherhoods and charitable societies, from Morocco to Lithuania, would maintain this same register for centuries.
