Miriam dies and the well that accompanied the people dries up; Aaron dies and all the people mourn him for thirty days. The section is a book of mourning, and it describes the rite of purification after contact with a corpse — the care of the dead, hevra kadisha, will become the most universal of Jewish communal institutions, present even where there was nothing else left.
