Royaumes divisés, Élie et Élisée

Summary

Après Salomon, le royaume se scinde : Israël au nord, Juda au sud. Élie combat les prêtres de Baal au mont Carmel ; Élisée poursuit son œuvre. La maison d'Omri et d'Achab gouverne Samarie.

The century in narrative

Le IXᵉ siècle avant notre ère voit les deux royaumes se consolider, s'affronter, se réconcilier, et surtout entendre gronder dans leurs rues les voix prophétiques qui resteront pour l'histoire le sommet moral de l'Ancien Orient.

Au nord, après les troubles des premières dynasties, Omri prend le pouvoir (c. 885 av.) et fonde Samarie sur une colline qu'il achète. La dynastie omride devient en deux générations une puissance régionale. Son fils Ahab épouse Jézabel, fille d'Ittobaal roi de Tyr et de Sidon — alliance prestigieuse mais conséquente : Jézabel impose à la cour le culte de Baal-Melqart. Des prophètes de Baal, des prêtresses d'Ashéra s'installent à Samarie. Ahab construit un temple à Baal. Les prophètes du Dieu d'Israël sont persécutés ; la reine Jézabel les fait mettre à mort.

C'est dans ce contexte que surgit Élie le Tishbite. Venu du Galaad, hirsute, vêtu de poil, Élie n'a aucun statut officiel. Il annonce une sécheresse de trois ans, est nourri par les corbeaux au torrent de Krit, ressuscite le fils de la veuve de Sarepta. Puis il propose l'épreuve du mont Carmel : 450 prophètes de Baal contre lui seul. Chacun préparera un taureau ; le Dieu qui répondra par le feu sera le vrai. Les prophètes de Baal dansent et se lacèrent toute la journée — rien. Élie, lui, arrose par trois fois son taureau, puis prie brièvement. Le feu descend du ciel, consume l'offrande, les pierres, la terre, même l'eau. « L'Éternel est Dieu ! L'Éternel est Dieu ! » crie le peuple (1 R 18,39). Élie fait massacrer les prophètes de Baal ; Jézabel jure de le tuer. Élie fuit au Sinaï, y entend non pas l'orage mais « le son d'un silence ténu » (1 R 19,12) — une des plus belles théophanies bibliques.

Son disciple Élisée poursuit l'œuvre. Il ressuscite un enfant, guérit Naaman le lépreux syrien, sauve la veuve du prophète de ses créanciers par le miracle de l'huile. Il oint secrètement Jéhu, général d'Israël, qui fomente un coup d'État. En 841, Jéhu extermine la maison d'Omri (il tue Joram, roi d'Israël, Ahazyahou roi de Juda, Jézabel elle-même jetée d'une fenêtre), puis les prêtres de Baal. Une nouvelle dynastie, jéhuite, règne en Israël pour un siècle.

Au sud, le royaume de Juda connaît une plus grande stabilité sous la dynastie davidique. Asa (c. 912-871) et son fils Josaphat (c. 870-848) sont présentés comme des rois pieux qui réforment le culte. Josaphat envoie même des lévites dans les villes pour enseigner la Torah — premier effort pédagogique religieux documenté.

Le siècle laisse deux témoignages épigraphiques décisifs. La stèle de Mésha, roi de Moab (c. 840 av.), gravée à Dhiban, est la plus ancienne inscription hors-biblique mentionnant « YHWH » et la « maison de David ». La stèle de Tel Dan, retrouvée en 1993 en Galilée, mentionne elle aussi la « maison de David ». Pour la première fois, l'histoire biblique trouve son ancrage archéologique — et Israël entre dans l'histoire officielle du Proche-Orient non plus seulement comme peuple, mais comme dynastie.
