According to the Mishnah, Tu BiShvat is the New Year of the Trees, the reference date for calculating agricultural tithes. The custom developed over time into eating fruits, especially those associated with the Land of Israel. The kabbalists of Safed instituted a Tu BiShvat seder, and the festival has acquired an ecological dimension in contemporary Judaism.
