Baruch Spinoza (1632-1677), excommunicated by the Amsterdam Jewish community in 1656, laid the foundations of historical biblical criticism in his Theological-Political Treatise (1670). He questioned the authorship of the Pentateuch and distinguished faith from reason. His Ethics formulated a rigorous pantheism identifying God with Nature (Deus sive Natura).
