# Introduction
The word pilpul designates, in the tradition of Jewish study, not a work or a person, but a way of thinking: an art of questioning the talmudic text so as to draw from it imperceptible distinctions. The term is a collective word designating various talmudic methods of study and exposition, in particular through the use of subtle juridical, conceptual and casuistic differentiation [Encyclopaedia Judaica / Encyclopedia.com]. Its history is not first and foremost that of a vocabulary but that of schools, cities and masters: the academies of Cracow and Prague at the turn of the 16th century, the great yeshivot of Poland and Lithuania, then their reform in the 18th century. It is this living matter — study halls, controversies, names — that this book intends to follow, before turning, further on, to the etymology and resonances of the word itself.
What pilpul puts at stake goes beyond technique. It raises a question that divided the Jewish learned world for centuries: to study the Talmud, is it to patiently reconstruct the literal meaning of an ancient debate, or is it to deploy one's own intellectual virtuosity upon the matter of the text? From this tension were born the finest pages of rabbinic dialectic — and the most vigorous critiques.
