Introduction
There is no Jewish tradition without an intense, almost carnal relationship to the text of the Law — and there is no living Law without the patient work of those who, generation after generation, have sought to fix it, order it, make it accessible. The codification of Jewish Law — the written ordering of the halakha — is not a simple exercise in librarianship. It is the history of a foundational tension: that which opposes the fear of freezing a word received as living and oral, to the imperious need to save it from oblivion, dispersion, and controversy. As Shmuel Trigano has argued, the Law is not first and foremost an apparatus of constraints but the very foundation of the political and communal order of Israel, the origin of the Jewish city [Trigano, 1991].
Each great codification was born of a crisis: the ruin of a center, the fracturing of a diaspora, the fear of seeing a science lost. From the fixing of the Mishna in the second century to the "table set" of Safed in the sixteenth, this book traces how men, in precise cities and at identifiable dates, transformed a shifting knowledge into written monuments that still structure Jewish life today.
