To fix the pronunciation and cantillation of the consonantal biblical text, the Masoretes developed several systems of vowel signs. The Tiberian system, elaborated by schools such as that of Ben Asher, prevailed and is still used today. The Babylonian and Palestinian supralinear systems also coexisted, illuminating the history of the language and its transmission.
