The Tosafists are the Ashkenazi and French commentators who developed the Tosafot, dialectical glosses printed alongside the Talmudic text. Heirs of Rashi, several being his descendants such as Rabbenu Tam and the Rashbam, they juxtapose Talmudic passages to resolve apparent contradictions. Their method profoundly shaped Talmudic study down to the present day.
