The kabbalists of Safed instituted "tikkunim," vigils and services meant to repair the upper world. The Tikkun Leil Shavuot devotes the festival night to uninterrupted study of the Torah, while the Tikkun Chatzot is a midnight lamentation over the exile of the Shekhinah and the destruction of the Temple. These mystically structured practices spread widely throughout the Jewish world.
