Takkanot are legislative decrees enacted by the sages to meet the needs of society and preserve religious order. Distinct from biblical law, they include famous institutions such as Hillel's prozbul, the kindling of Hanukkah lights, and the takkanot of Rabbenu Gershom forbidding polygamy in Ashkenaz. They illustrate the adaptive capacity of halakhah.
