Present in Tripolitania and Cyrenaica since Roman times, Libya's Jews were concentrated in Tripoli and Benghazi. Under Italian colonization and then German occupation, they suffered racial laws and deportation to the Giado camp. The pogroms of 1945 and 1948 precipitated the near-total emigration to Israel.
