Annexed by Austria in 1772, Galicia had one of Europe's highest Jewish densities, divided among Hasidism (Belz, Sadigora), maskilim and orthodoxy. Lemberg (Lviv) and Brody were its great economic and intellectual centres. Widespread poverty fed substantial emigration to Vienna and America.
This Great Book does not yet have published chapters. The chapters — each bearing its register, its epistemic status and its sources — will be added as editorial enrichment and assisted generation progress.
