The ancient, deeply Arabic-speaking community of Damascus lived in distinct Jewish quarters at the city's heart. Renowned for its rabbis, silversmiths and weavers, it endured the 1840 Damascus Affair, a blood-libel accusation with international repercussions. Its decline accelerated in the twentieth century with emigration.
