On the Malabar coast, the Cochin Jews formed an ancient community, distinct from the Bene Israel, organized around the 1568 Paradesi Synagogue. Spice traders, they enjoyed privileges engraved on copper plates by local rulers. Almost all emigrated to Israel after 1948, founding moshavim among other settlements.
