Settled in Bukhara, Samarkand and along the Silk Road, the Bukharan Jews spoke Judeo-Tajik (Bukhori) and developed a distinct culture of dyers and merchants. Long isolated, they experienced a religious revival in the nineteenth century through the emissary Yosef Maman from Safed. Most emigrated to Israel and New York after 1970.
