Under British rule, Baghdadi and Cochin Jews settled in Rangoon and Mandalay, where they built the Musmeah Yeshua synagogue in 1896. Traders in teak, rice and textiles, they formed a small prosperous community. The Japanese invasion of 1942 forced their flight, and the community never fully reconstituted.
