Merchants from Iraq and Syria, the Baghdadi Jews settled in Bombay, Calcutta and Rangoon under the British Empire. The Sassoon family, dubbed the 'Rothschilds of the East', built a cotton and opium trading empire linking India to China. Anglophile philanthropists, they erected synagogues, schools and hospitals before dispersing after 1947.
