The Hekhalot and the Mysticism of Heavenly Ascent

The Hekhalot ("palaces") literature describes the adept's ascent through the celestial palaces to the divine throne, extending the Maaseh Merkavah. These texts, blending visions, hymns, and formulas, presuppose rigorous preparations and spiritual dangers. They constitute one of the earliest attested forms of Jewish mysticism and foreshadow certain later contemplative techniques.
