A baraita ("external," in Aramaic) is a tannaitic teaching not included in Rabbi Yehudah ha-Nasi's Mishnah. Baraitot, introduced in the Talmud by formulas such as "tanya" or "tanu rabbanan," feed amoraic debate. Some collections, such as Rabbi Ishmael's baraita on the thirteen hermeneutical rules, gained a special status.
