Leopold Zunz (1794-1886), a founding figure of the Verein für Cultur und Wissenschaft der Juden (1819), inaugurated the critical and historical study of Jewish literature and liturgy. His works on synagogue preaching (Die gottesdienstlichen Vorträge der Juden) and on liturgical poetry laid the methodological foundations of modern Jewish scholarship.
