Pirkei Avot ("Chapters of the Fathers") is a tractate of the Mishnah, in the order Nezikin, wholly devoted to ethical wisdom and the moral maxims of the sages. It opens with the transmission of the Torah from Sinai and gathers aphorisms on study, humility, justice and the fear of Heaven. Its public reading on Sabbaths between Passover and Shavuot is a widespread custom.
