Cultural Zionism is the current associated with Ahad HaAm, the pseudonym of Asher Ginsberg (1856–1927), who placed emphasis on the spiritual and cultural renewal of the Jewish people rather than on the mere creation of a state. A critic of the purely political Zionism of Theodor Herzl, he argued that Palestine must first become a "spiritual center" irrigating the entirety of the diaspora through the renaissance of Hebrew culture and language. His essays, written in a Hebrew of great clarity, exercised a considerable influence on the intellectuals and educators of the yishuv. He also insisted on the moral dimension of the national project and expressed concern about relations with the Arab population of Palestine. His thought durably nourished debates on the identity and purpose of Zionism.
