The Sefer Chasidim ("Book of the Pious") is the chief work of Ashkenazi Hasidism, a movement of intense piety in medieval Rhineland, associated chiefly with Rabbi Judah the Pious of Regensburg. It sets out an ideal of devotion, repentance, humility and moral scruple going beyond strict halakhah. It also offers a precious picture of Jewish life in Ashkenaz.
