The acronym PaRDeS designates four levels of interpretation of sacred texts: peshat (literal sense), remez (allusive sense), derash (homiletic sense), and sod (mystical, secret sense). This hermeneutical scheme, popularized in the medieval period and cherished by kabbalists, structures the idea of a manifold depth of Scripture. The term also evokes the famous Talmudic story of the four sages who entered the "orchard."
