The Revisionist movement was founded in 1925 by Zeev Jabotinsky, who established the World Union of Zionist Revisionists. It demanded the establishment of a Jewish state on both banks of the Jordan and criticized the gradualism of the labor movement and British policy. Jabotinsky championed an assertive conception of national sovereignty and argued for the evacuation of Jews from Eastern Europe in the face of mounting dangers. The movement gave rise to youth organizations such as Betar and was linked to the paramilitary organization of the Irgun. After independence, the Revisionist current continued in the Herut party, led by Menachem Begin, which became one of the main components of the future Likud.
