The Mizrahi movement, whose name is an acronym of Merkaz Rouhani ("spiritual center"), was founded in 1902 in Vilna by Rabbi Yitzhak Yaacov Reines. It aimed to reconcile fidelity to religious tradition with commitment to the Zionist project, affirming the bond between the Torah, the people, and the Land of Israel. From its labor wing emerged Hapoel HaMizrahi, which combined religious observance with the pioneering ideal and founded kibbutzim and its own institutions. This movement constituted the matrix of religious Zionism and, after the creation of the State, gave rise to the National Religious Party (Mafdal). It played an important role in Israeli political life and in the development of a national religious educational system.
