The Alliance Israélite Universelle, founded in Paris in 1860, was an organization dedicated to the defense of Jewish rights and to their "regeneration" through education. It created a vast network of schools, primarily in the Maghreb, the Levant, the Balkans, and the Middle East, providing French-style instruction to tens of thousands of pupils. These schools profoundly transformed Sephardic and Oriental Jewish societies, fostering literacy, social mobility, and openness to modern ideas. The Alliance also intervened diplomatically to defend threatened communities in various countries. Its work elicited contrasting assessments, between recognition of its educational role and criticism of its Francophile orientation and its sometimes condescending view of local cultures.
This Great Book does not yet have published chapters. The chapters — each bearing its register, its epistemic status and its sources — will be added as editorial enrichment and assisted generation progress.
