Judah Loew ben Bezalel (c. 1512-1609), the Maharal of Prague, was an original thinker blending exegesis, ethics, and metaphysics. In works such as Tiferet Yisrael and Netzah Yisrael, he developed a philosophy of the election of Israel, exile, and redemption, distinct from Aristotelian rationalism. His thought later influenced Hasidism and Rabbi Kook.
