The herem is the gravest measure of exclusion in rabbinic law, imposing temporary or permanent social and religious banishment on a community member. It served to enforce court decisions and communal ordinances. Famous cases include the herem pronounced against Spinoza in Amsterdam in 1656 and the anathemas exchanged during the anti-Maimonidean controversy.
