Rabbi Elijah ben Solomon Zalman (1720–1797), the Vilna Gaon, was one of the greatest Talmudic authorities of the modern era. A master of every discipline of Jewish learning, he favored rigorous textual study, the establishment of accurate readings and attention to the plain sense, reacting against excessive pilpul. A leader of opposition to Hasidism, he left a lasting mark on the Lithuanian tradition.
